Backbends can be incredibly therapeutic when practiced in a thoughtful way.

Recruit the arms and legs to help strengthen and lengthen the spine when backbending - keep them steady and solid whether bent or straight (firm the muscles into the bones with straight limbs).

The abdominals are also important in backbending! Think of the belly button drawing back into the spine to maintain a long low back.
Imagine the bottom tips of the shoulder blades moving forward into the chest to widen the collarbones - this can be applied to standing postures as well, even tadasana.

Allow the breath to move freely into the back body - especially between the shoulder blades and in the lower back. Keep the eyes and jaw soft, the neck long and spacious.

Most importantly - enjoy the process and thank yourselves just for showing up.
